Humanitarian Minister to Vie for Deputy Speaker of the House of the People

Khadija Diriye has entered the race to become the House of the People’s Deputy Speaker in the upcoming elections.

Currently, Diriye serves as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).

Elections for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lower House are designed for next week.

According to the 10-member committee appointed to organize the entire process, those interested in vying for Speaker or Deputy Speaker have until April 22 to register.

Diriye is interested in serving as the First Deputy Speaker of Somalia’s federal parliament.

She declared her interest through Facebook.

The humanitarian minister posted her interest on her official Facebook page.

Diriye is one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in Somalia after winning her reelection in January 2022.

According to sources, she will be up against Fahad Yasin.

Yasin is the immediate former head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
