ICA Holds Public Forum on Somali Passport in Mogadishu

The Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) hosted a public forum in Mogadishu centered around the theme “Somalia Passport To the World” on Saturday.

This highly significant event sought to address the challenges and opportunities related to the Somali passport.

The participation of high-ranking federal officials underscored the importance of this initiative in enhancing the passport’s credibility, functionality, and international recognition.

Improvements in Security Features

Participants agreed on the importance of enhancing the passport’s security to meet international standards, such as incorporating biometric data, holograms, and other anti-counterfeiting measures.

International Recognition

They were also adamant on the need for addressing the hurdles that prevent the Somali passport from being widely accepted globally, including diplomatic efforts to strengthen bilateral and multilateral agreements.

Efficiency in Issuance and Renewal

Various speakers emphasized that the government should lead efforts aimed at streamlining the processes for issuing and renewing passports to reduce delays and improve accessibility for Somali citizens.

Public Awareness and Trust

Authorities have to start building public confidence in the passport system by ensuring transparency and reliability in its administration.

Technological Advancements

Somalia should now be leveraging technology to modernize the passport system, including digital applications and online tracking systems.

Collaboration with International Organizations

Working with entities like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure compliance with global standards will help greatly, as participants agreed.

This forum represents a proactive step toward strengthening Somalia’s national identity and facilitating the mobility of its citizens, which is crucial for trade, education, and diaspora engagement.

The outcomes of such discussions could significantly impact Somalia’s integration into the global community.
