ICRIC Pushes to Conclude Somalia Constitution Review

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Independent Constitutional Review and Implementation Commission (ICRIC) convened on Sunday to accelerate work on Somalia’s long-delayed constitutional review process.

The meeting centered on advancing priority activities and finalizing the remaining chapters of the provisional constitution, which has been in place since 2012.

Commission members reviewed progress on contentious provisions, aiming to resolve outstanding legal and political issues that have hindered completion.

They reaffirmed their commitment to producing a final, consensus-based document that reflects Somalia’s federal structure, strengthens governance, and safeguards citizens’ rights.

The discussions also outlined a timeline for drafting and approving the remaining sections, signaling a renewed push to meet national deadlines.

Finalizing the constitution is seen as pivotal for Somalia’s political stability, state-building efforts, and the organization of future elections.

The ICRIC stressed the importance of inclusive engagement, promising continued consultations with federal and state authorities, civil society, and international partners to ensure broad ownership of the constitutional process.

Completion of the review is expected to pave the way for a permanent legal framework that will guide Somalia’s governance and institutional reforms for years to come.
