IGAD Confident of Fruitful Talks between Somalia and Somaliland

Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has expressed confidence that the talks between Somalia and Somaliland would be fruitful.

Somalia and Somaliland resumed their talks under the facilitation of President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in early June.

The government of the United States, through the US Ambassador to Somalia, Donald Yamamoto, also played a crucial role in facilitating the talks.

Since then, the governments of Somalia and Somaliland established a technical committee to begin talking and ironing out contentious issues between them.

IGAD issued a statement after its 36th Summit, which was held virtually this year because of COVID-19 fears.

In its statement, IGAD expressed hope that the technical committees will work hard to find and negotiate a lasting solution.

Somaliland and Somalia have been at loggerheads since the former separated from the latter in 1991 following the Civil War of the 1990s.
