IGAD Establishes a Blue Economy Department in Mogadishu

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has agreed to establish a Blue Economy Department in Mogadishu, Somalia.

This was revealed on Monday when Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the IGAD Executive Secretary, arrived in Mogadishu on an official visit.

This move is significant for the region, as it highlights Somalia’s strategic position in managing and promoting the blue economy, which includes sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and ocean ecosystem health.

The agreement also strengthens Somalia’s role within IGAD and boosts regional cooperation in harnessing marine resources for the benefit of member states.
