IGAD to Host Summit to Discuss Diplomatic Row between Ethiopia and Somalia

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will hold an extraordinary summit on January 18 to discuss the increasingly volatile relations between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has agreed to host the summit next week.

IGAD President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti convened the meeting.

He issued a press release on Thursday indicating that the organization will meet in Uganda within the next 8 days to discuss the deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Somalia is angry that Ethiopia signed an agreement on January 1 to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation.

In return, Somaliland agreed to grant Ethiopia direct access to 20kms of its coastline.
