Improved AU-US Partnership Will Boost Stabilization Efforts in Somalia, Says AUC Chairperson

Improved partnership between the United States and the African Union Commission (AUC) will help the ongoing stabilization efforts in Somalia, the newly elected chairperson of the commission has said.

The recent meeting between U.S. Ambassador to the African Union, Stephanie S. Sullivan, and the Chairperson of the AUC, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, highlights the strategic importance both parties place on their partnership, particularly in supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts and reinforcing commitments to regional peace and security.

Amb. Sullivan, appointed by President Biden on June 21, 2024, has a distinguished diplomatic career, including serving as U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and the Republic of Congo.

Youssouf, elected in February 2025, brings extensive experience as Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The collaboration between the AU and the US has been marked by high-level engagements aimed at promoting stability and development in the region. For instance, in November 2023, immediate former AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to enhance mutual support for democratic transitions and address challenges like food security and climate change.

The recent dialogue between Amb. Sullivan and Youssouf underscores the ongoing commitment of both the AU and the US to work together in addressing regional challenges and fostering peace and security in Somalia and the broader African continent.
