Increased Insecurity Leaves the Construction of Erigavo-Burao Road in Doubt

The continued construction of the Erigavo-Burao road is in doubt because of the increased level of insecurity experienced in the region.

Yesterday, two rival clans clashed in Fadhi-gaab, Sanaag thus worsening insecurity in the region.

Officials in charge of the project say the recent inter-clan clashes forced construction workers to abandon their work.

The officials say that workers need guarantees that nothing will compromise their safety. They also call for increased protection of the equipment used in constructing the road.

Mustafe Mohamed Qalab, the Deputy Manager of the Roads Development Agency in Somaliland, broke the news to the country yesterday.

He said, “Fighting between rival clans has broken out in the region thus forcing our workers to abandon the construction of the Erigavo-Burao road.”

Qalab indicated that construction would only resume once security officers quell the ongoing skirmishes and assure workers of their safety.

In the meantime, Qalab said that all workers have been relocated from Fadhi-gaab to a more secure place until the clashes end.
