Interior Ministry Engages Civil Society and Electoral Body in Local Elections Dialogue

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation took part in a vital consultative meeting bringing together Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) to discuss progress and challenges in Somalia’s ongoing local council elections process.

The meeting served as a platform for open dialogue between the government, electoral officials, and civil society representatives, all of whom play a key role in shaping the country’s democratic transition. Discussions centered on strengthening collaboration, ensuring transparency, and promoting inclusive participation, particularly for women and youth in local elections.

Officials from the Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting credible and peaceful elections across all federal member states. They emphasized the importance of public trust and the need for CSOs to help mobilize communities and encourage civic engagement.

Participants also exchanged views on logistical readiness, voter education, and mechanisms for dispute resolution during the electoral process. The NIEBC representatives highlighted the progress made so far and the challenges that remain, including security and resource constraints.

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding that continued cooperation among state institutions, electoral bodies, and civil society is essential for achieving fair and representative local governance in Somalia.
