International Community Must Act on Humanitarian Crisis Facing Somalia, UN Relief Chief Says

The international community must act on the humanitarian crisis that is currently facing Somalia.

Martin Griffiths, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said this on Saturday, September 3.

He was speaking a few moments after concluding his humanitarian visit to Baidoa in Somalia.

Griffiths said that the silence of the international community on the humanitarian crisis facing Somalia remains deafening.

The UN relief chief said that he had seen Somali babies who were too weak to cry in Baidoa.

He expressed shock at seeing mothers who were still children themselves during the visit to Baidoa and other parts of Somalia.

Griffiths stated that the ongoing drought in Somalia has affected life incredibly.

Further, he called Baidoa the “epicenter” of the hunger crisis ravaging large swathes of the East African nation.
