International Partners Assure Somalia of Full Support in Fight Against Al-Shabaab

The European Union (EU), United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), and other international partners have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in its fight against Al-Shabaab and other terrorist organizations. This collective stance underscores the international community’s dedication to Somalia’s stability and security.

Recent Developments

UN Authorization of New Mission

In December 2024, the United Nations authorized a new African peacekeeping mission to support Somalia against Al-Shabaab. This mission aims to deploy up to 12,626 personnel, replacing the previous African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) with a more streamlined operation. The resolution received positive responses from countries like the UK and France, highlighting a strengthened focus on stabilization and humanitarian assistance in Somalia.

US Military Actions

In February 2025, under President Donald Trump’s administration, the US conducted airstrikes targeting senior Islamic State (IS) operatives in Somalia. These strikes, coordinated with Somali authorities, resulted in the elimination of multiple terrorists without civilian casualties. This action reflects the US’s ongoing commitment to combating terrorism in the region and supporting Somali efforts against extremist groups.

These developments highlight the sustained international support for Somalia’s efforts to combat terrorism and promote stability within its borders.
