International Partners Continue Talks with FMS Leaders over Elections Impasse

Representatives of Somalia’s international partners continued their talks with leaders of Federal Member States (FMS).

On January 21, United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) held a virtual meeting with President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland.

UNSOM was represented in the e-meeting by James Swan, the UN Special Envoy to Somalia.

According to a communiqué from UNSOM, Special Envoy Swan sought to identify and pursue solutions for the ongoing impasse.

Swan reiterated his belief that Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has to pursue dialogue and compromise to break the elections deadlock.

The UN Special Envoy has already met some regional state leaders. He is scheduled to hold further meetings with the rest later.

Swan’s approach is to meet each regional state leader separately.

His meeting with Deni is crucial since the Puntland leader is one of the fiercest critics of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s administration.
