International partners released a statement expressing support for the proposal to establish a platform for Somali political and community leaders, as announced by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in his 29 March 2025 Eid-al-Fitr address. This initiative aims to incorporate diverse perspectives and efforts in combating terrorism and establishing a democratic, federal system of government.
A unified and inclusive strategy is essential for achieving success against Al-Shabaab and advancing Somalia’s state-building priorities. Positive responses from leading Somali political figures to this initiative have been noted.
The government, Federal Member State leaders, as well as political and societal stakeholders are urged to convene promptly to ensure a unified, effective response to the ongoing Al-Shabaab offensive, addressing this urgent national security priority. Swift and decisive action by Somali leaders on critical national political, constitutional, and electoral matters would facilitate further support from international partners.
They paid tribute to the resilient men and women of the Somali Security Forces and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) for their efforts in countering recent advances by Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle. Furthermore, the partners vowed to remain steadfast in supporting the government and people of Somalia as they strive to build a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous nation.
