Somalia’s international partners met in Dhusamareb on Tuesday, October 27 and urged the country’s leaders to deliver the much-awaited 30 percent women representation.
Representatives from the country’s international partners met with President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor of Somalia’s semiautonomous region of Galmudug State.
The representatives were from African Union (AU), European Union (EU), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and United Nations (UN).
Women in Somalia have been agitating for increased representation in government and politics for decades without much success.
However, this year the country’s leadership seems intent on delivering on this promise.
The biggest test of their commitment comes in November 2020 as the country holds local and parliamentary elections.
Apart from the 30 percent women quota, the leaders also discussed several other issues.
These included the importance of holding fair, transparent, and inclusive elections.
Additionally, the country’s partners urged political leaders to work together to deliver the peace and unity that Somalis need.
