International partners led by the United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM) have welcomed breakthrough in talks between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) in Dhusamareb.
According to the international partners, the breakthrough in talks is great for the long-awaited return to “constructive collaboration between the leaders of FGS and FMS.”
In a statement released to the press yesterday, Somalia’s international partners also welcomed the formation of a technical committee whose mandate is to find solutions regarding election modalities.
Somalia is scheduled to proceed with preparations for national elections in 2020 followed by presidential polls in 2021. Leaders at the Dhusamareb talks agreed not to postpone elections, a view recently made public by the National Independent Elections Commission (NIEC).
International partners requested the involvement of all stakeholders in the country to form a broad-based agreement that benefits the country. They also urged leaders to move Somalia away selection of leaders to directly electing their preferred candidates.
