President Mohamed Farmaajo has been urged by the International Press Institute to halt the growing harassment of journalists by his government.
The institute sent a letter to Somalia’s president highlighting their concern at the growing lack of press freedom in the country.
It said the persistent harassment of media outlets and their employees by the government was unwelcome and sad.
In the recent past, several journalists have found themselves arrested and detained by the intelligence community in Somalia and other government officials.
Further, the Institute also informed President Farmaajo that it would be impossible for democracy to thrive in the Horn of Africa nation without an independent media.
Through the letter, the Institute reminded President Farmaajo of the importance of respecting the freedom of expression and allowing the media to operate freely as the constitution states.
