Mogadishu, Somalia – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia’s journey toward peace, stability, and resilience, following high-level discussions between IOM leadership and Somali government officials.
Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General of Operations at IOM, described it as a “privilege” to meet with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and other senior ministers to discuss strengthening collaboration on key issues, including migration governance, internal displacement, and peacebuilding.
“At a time when Somalia faces significant challenges and opportunities, we are proud to stand alongside the Somali people. After almost 20 years of continuous presence in the country, IOM is staying the course. We believe in building a stronger, more resilient Somalia through a principled, cooperative approach,” said Daniels.
The discussions centered on enhancing durable solutions for displaced populations, supporting return and reintegration efforts, improving migration management, and aligning humanitarian and development responses with national priorities. IOM emphasized its readiness to provide both technical expertise and on-the-ground assistance.
Prime Minister Barre welcomed IOM’s ongoing support, describing the organization as a “vital partner” in Somalia’s recovery and nation-building process. He highlighted the importance of coherent strategies that uphold dignity, human rights, and sustainable development for displaced communities and migrants alike.
Somalia continues to grapple with a complex mix of conflict, climate shocks, and economic hardship, which have triggered repeated waves of internal displacement and irregular migration. With the country entering a new phase of state-building and stabilization, the government is prioritizing the return, relocation, and reintegration of affected populations.
IOM has been operational in Somalia since 2006, implementing a wide range of programs in displacement tracking, community stabilization, health, livelihoods, and migration management. Its long-standing presence has positioned it as a key actor in both emergency response and long-term development efforts.
The latest high-level engagement signals a deepening of the partnership between IOM and the Federal Government of Somalia, with a shared vision to promote safe, dignified, and solutions-oriented approaches to mobility and displacement challenges.
