President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro of Somaliland recently held high-level discussions with George Conway, the United Nations Deputy Special Representative, Resident Coordinator, and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia. The meeting focused on enhancing humanitarian collaboration and addressing regional stability challenges.
Conway, who has been actively involved in coordinating humanitarian efforts in Somalia, including cash transfer programs for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and addressing the impacts of climate-related disasters, engaged with President Irro to align on strategies for humanitarian response and development initiatives.
During the meeting, President Irro emphasized his administration’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, particularly in regions like Las Anod. He highlighted the establishment of the Somaliland Peace Council (SPC) aimed at facilitating ceasefires, prisoner exchanges, and reopening humanitarian corridors. The President also appealed for UN support in building robust security agencies to enhance stability in the Horn of Africa.
Conway’s delegation included Blaise Kabongo Mujika, Head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Somaliland, and other senior UN officials. Their visit underscores the UN’s commitment to supporting Somaliland’s efforts in achieving lasting peace and implementing tangible reforms across various sectors.
This engagement reflects a broader UN strategy to strengthen partnerships with regional authorities, ensuring that humanitarian assistance is effectively coordinated and reaches those most in need.
