Israel Officially Recognizes Somaliland as Independent Sovereign State

JERUSALEM/HARGEISA – In a transformative geopolitical shift, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent sovereign state. The declaration, signed alongside Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Iro), establishes full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors and the opening of embassies.

The agreement aligns with the framework of the Abraham Accords, seeking to expand cooperation and alliance. This move ends decades of diplomatic isolation for Somaliland, which has functioned as a stable, de facto independent entity since 1991. Following the failed Ethiopia’s MoUS earlier in 2024, Israel’s endorsement solidifies Somaliland’s standing as a vital maritime partner at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, offering a strategic counterweight to regional threats and Iranian-backed proxies in the Red Sea.

Cultural and Religious Dimensions of the Recognition

The reaction to this development reflects deep-seated cultural and religious sensitivities within Somali society. In Somaliland specifically, the prospect of ties with Israel is seen by many as a significant threat to their traditional identity and religious principles. On social media, reports of the arrest of the first religious leader are emerging.

Global Impact

Condemnation statement are pouring in. The African Union, Saudi Arabia, the State of Palestine, Türkiye, Djibouti, among others, expressed their support for the Federal Government of Somalia and support for the sovereignty and unity of Somalia.

Closely monitoring reactions from Awdal, Sool, and Sanaag, territories contested by Somaliland, is essential. Additionally, the influential religious leadership in Somaliland has yet to release an official statement. Another critical factor involves the Al-Shabaab leadership figures who originate from the Somaliland, as their response could significantly impact the security situation.
