JERUSALEM/HARGEISA – In a transformative geopolitical shift, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent sovereign state. The declaration, signed alongside Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Iro), establishes full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors and the opening of embassies.
The agreement aligns with the framework of the Abraham Accords, seeking to expand cooperation and alliance. This move ends decades of diplomatic isolation for Somaliland, which has functioned as a stable, de facto independent entity since 1991. Following the failed Ethiopia’s MoUS earlier in 2024, Israel’s endorsement solidifies Somaliland’s standing as a vital maritime partner at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, offering a strategic counterweight to regional threats and Iranian-backed proxies in the Red Sea.

Condemnation statement are pouring in. The African Union, Saudi Arabia, the State of Palestine, Türkiye, Djibouti, among others, expressed their support for the Federal Government of Somalia and support for the sovereignty and unity of Somalia.
