Italy, UNSOS Deepen Coordination to Boost Somalia’s Security Transition

Mogadishu, Somalia – A senior official from the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) met with Italy’s ambassador in Mogadishu to reinforce cooperation on the country’s evolving security transition, underscoring the growing urgency as Somalia prepares for a new phase of stabilization.

Qurat-ul-Ain Sadozai, who leads the coordination efforts for UNSOS, held talks with Ambassador Pier Mario Daccò Coppi to assess how the mission’s logistical support can better align with the needs of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF). The discussion came at a time when federal forces are expected to gradually assume expanded responsibilities as the transition from ATMIS moves forward.

Both officials reviewed key priorities under the Somali Security Forces Trust Fund (SSFTF), an instrument intended to streamline assistance for national forces and ensure reliable backing for training, mobility, and operational readiness. Their meeting focused on identifying gaps that still hinder effective force generation, especially in frontline regions where threats remain unpredictable.

Italy has long been one of Somalia’s most consistent international partners, particularly in the security and institutional reform sectors. The renewed engagement demonstrates Mogadishu’s continued reliance on external support while also emphasizing its determination to lead its own security architecture.

The talks reflected a shared understanding that the success of the transition hinges on steady cooperation, predictable resources, and close coordination between Somalia, its partners, and the UN system. For Somalia, the pathway ahead remains complex, but each aligned step strengthens the foundation for a more self-reliant national security framework.
