Japan and South Korea Carry out Anti-Piracy Drills Near Somalia

Japan and South Korea carried out anti-piracy drills off the Somalia coast. The two countries have joined Spain in undertaking this exercise.

On Tuesday, South Korea’s military confirmed that the exercise, which is dubbed ‘Operation Atalanta’ is under the supervision of the European Union Naval Force in Somalia.

Furthermore, South Korean military said it often participates in similar drafts upon request by the EU Naval Force.

Reports indicate that similar drills have taken place in these waters since 2008.

The two Asian neighbors took part in the drills despite the simmering tension between them over trade and history.

Despite that, the drills are designed to prepare their forces to be ready to protect the Somalia waters against pirates, who target this region a lot.
