The Jowhar Offstream Storage Programme (JOSP) project has been relaunched in HirShabelle state to tackle the twin challenges of floods and drought.
Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama launched the project on Wednesday.
He relaunched the project a few hours after arriving in HirShabelle’s Jowhar on a working visit.
Jama, who is also the Acting Prime Minister in the absence of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, held talks with HirShabelle’s President Ali Hussein Gudlawe upon arrival.
JOSP is an initiative worth $140 million.
It involves the rehabilitation of a huge irrigation scheme in a few parts of HirShabelle.
The climate resilience initiative will reach out to more than 1.5 million people in HirShabelle by reducing the risk of floods while mitigating drought and its subsequent effects.
