Journalist Urges EU to Base Cooperation with Somalia on Human Rights

A local journalist has urged the European Union to base its cooperation with Somalia on human rights.

Journalist Abdalle Ahmed Mumin hit out at the Somali government for the tons of human rights abuses it has committed over the years.

Mumin has endured human rights abuses at the hands of the government for several months now.

Currently, he is based at the Center for Applied Human Rights based in England’s York University.

Mumin, who is the beneficiary of an Open Society Foundation Scholarship, urged the EU to reassess its increased cooperation and collaboration with Somalia.

He cited several other examples that the EU needs to consider.

These include deaths of civilians daily as well as widespread sexual offenses,

Mumin said that the government forces and the allied militias are equally to blame for the widespread human rights abuses in the country.
