Journalists Launch Campaign to Promote Peaceful Elections in Somalia

Journalists in Somalia have launched a campaign designed to promote peaceful elections in the country.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) launched the campaign on December 25.

NUSOJ mentioned that the campaign would serve two purposes; that is, promoting peaceful elections and fighting hate speech during the electioneering period.

Osman Abukar Dubbe, Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism flagged off the campaign on Friday.

NUSOJ organized the campaign in conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) also joined the rest in organizing the campaign.

Lately, Somalia has been beset by a series of hate messages from various political actors.

Currently, the East African nation is in the middle of intense electioneering period as it prepares to hold parliamentary elections in December 2020 and presidential polls in early 2021.
