JSP Endorses Muungaab to Face Jimaale in High-Stakes Banaadir Election

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) has endorsed Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, the current Governor of Banaadir Region, as its candidate in the upcoming election, setting the stage for a tightly contested race in Somalia’s political heartland.

Muungaab, a former mayor of Mogadishu, enters the race with the backing of the ruling party and a record centered on stability, urban renewal, and public service improvements. His campaign is expected to emphasize continuity and institutional experience, with the JSP’s support giving him both visibility and political muscle.

His main challenger, Yusuf Hussein Jimaale “Madale,” also a former mayor and governor, has re-emerged as a formidable opponent. Known for his grassroots approach and reformist appeal, Jimaale seeks to position himself as a candidate of change, promising accountability and greater inclusion. His base of support in Mogadishu’s business and civic circles could make him a serious threat to the incumbent.

The Banaadir race carries weight far beyond the region itself. As the seat of the capital and the center of federal power, control of Banaadir translates into significant political influence at the national level. Both campaigns are expected to tap into clan networks, civic movements, and youth engagement in a bid to shape voter sentiment.

With Muungaab banking on his record and Jimaale rallying around renewal, the contest is shaping up to be one of the most consequential local elections in recent Somali politics—one that could redefine alliances in Mogadishu and beyond.
