Jubbaland Could be the Newest COVID-19 Hotspot in Somalia

The southern federal state of Jubbaland is in line to be the newest COVID-19 hotspot in Somalia after recording the highest number of positive cases in the country on Wednesday.

While delivering her daily updates to the country, Dr. Fawziya Abikar who is the Minister of Health, said Jubbaland recorded 46 cases on Wednesday.

Barely a few weeks ago, the region had only reported 10 cases.

The huge increase might see Jubbaland overtaking Banadir region, where Mogadishu is, as the epicenter of the virulent disease in the Horn of Africa nation.

Currently, the tally for all confirmed cases in Jubbaland is 98.

Moreover, Dr. Abikar announced that most of Jubbaland’s cases are in Kismayo, which is its administrative capital.

With the tally of 98, Jubbaland has grown into the fourth most affected region in the country.

Banadir continues to lead with 1,080 cases followed by Puntland and Somaliland with 161 and 131 respectively.

Jubbaland is ahead of other Federal Member States such as Southwest, Galmadug, and HirShabelle that have recorded 83, 12, and 8 respectively.
