Mahmoud Sayid Adan, the Vice President of Jubbaland, a federal state in Somalia, recently met with delegations from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to discuss pressing humanitarian and cross-border issues.
The meeting focused on addressing challenges such as displacement, migration, and regional stability, which are critical concerns for Jubbaland and the broader East African region.
They discussed the need for coordinating efforts to provide aid to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts, droughts, and food insecurity in the region.
Further, enhancing collaboration between Jubbaland and neighboring states or countries to manage migration flows, combat human trafficking, and ensure the safe movement of people across borders, featured prominently in their talks.
They agreed on the importance of strengthening partnerships to address security challenges, including the presence of armed groups, which exacerbate humanitarian crises and hinder development efforts.
IOM and IGAD representatives promised to continue supporting Jubbaland’s institutions in managing migration and displacement issues, including improving border management and providing services to vulnerable populations.
The meeting underscores the importance of regional and international cooperation in addressing complex humanitarian and security challenges in the Horn of Africa.
Jubbaland’s engagement with IOM and IGAD reflects its commitment to finding sustainable solutions to these issues.
