Justice Minister Thanks Somali MPs for Passing the Juvenile Justice Bill

The House of the People of Somalia’s Federal Parliament has approved the Juvenile Justice Bill, a significant step toward enhancing the nation’s juvenile justice system and strengthening child rights protections. The bill received overwhelming support, with 139 votes in favor, two against, and no abstentions.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hassan Moallim Mohamud, expressed gratitude to parliament for passing the bill, emphasizing its importance in ensuring fairness for Somali youth within the justice sector.

This legislative development follows the Council of Ministers’ endorsement of both the Child Rights Bill and the Juvenile Justice Bill in August 2023. These bills reflect Somalia’s commitment to aligning its laws with international standards set by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Somalia ratified in 2015.

The Juvenile Justice Bill aims to provide fair and child-sensitive treatment of children who come into conflict with the law, offering protection, rehabilitation, and pathways for reintegration into society.

It establishes a clear legal framework for processes such as arrest, custody, prosecution, rehabilitation, and penalties for juvenile offenders.

The passage of this bill marks a critical advancement in safeguarding the rights and well-being of Somali children, demonstrating the government’s dedication to creating a just and equitable society for its youth.
