Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) base in southern Somalia on Sunday, October 4.
Two KDF’s Forward Operation Bases (FOB) in Lower Jubba came under heavy onslaught from the extremists.
The FOBs are located in Taabta and Abdalla Birole.
FOBs are critical to the success of any mission by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), especially the KDF contingent.
KDF operates such bases in different parts of Somalia.
For the better part of Sunday, both sides engaged in heavy gunfight though neither Al-Shabaab nor KDF issued a statement on the incident.
Sources added that the exchange of heavy artillery, bombs, and gunfire lasted several hours but there has been no report on the casualties involved.
