KDF’s Expenses Exceed $1.2b Amid Somalia Incursion

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SEPRI) has published reports showing that the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) spent more than $1.2 billion amid the Somalia incursion.

Most of the money has gone into recurrent expenditure with a substantial amount also dedicated to modernizing the force.

In 2017, KDF spent roughly around $1.16 billion. Consequently, SEPRI has noted a significant increase in the expenses.

According to SEPRI, the expenses rose by $57 million, which was necessitated by the urge to see the force updating its weapons to comply with international standards.

Further, SEPRI says it faced huge challenges in obtaining this information owing mainly to the conservative nature of Kenya’s Department of Defense (DoD).

Additionally, in its report, SEPRI indicates that KDF spent money that the National Treasury had allocated it in the current 2019/2020 FY.
