Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Defense, Monica Juma, has said that the country’s troops would only withdraw from Somalia based on the mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
In an interview with Daily Nation touching on various issues under her docket, CS Juma was non-committal about the exact dates the Kenyan government is to withdraw Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) troops from Somalia.
Instead, she said that KDF was “bound” by the plans within the multilateral effort and framework developed by AMISOM with the blessings of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
AMISOM is widely expected to withdraw its troops from Somalia in 2021. However, that could change since the country is currently planning for parliamentary polls in December 2020 followed by presidential elections in February 2021.
