Kenya and Algeria have both requested African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to extend its mandate in the East African nation.
This was revealed during a recent correspondence between the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Raychelle Omamo, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Sabri Boukadoum, her Algerian counterpart, reiterated AMISOM’s importance in Somalia.
In their view, Omamo and Boukadoum said that AMISOM plays a crucial role in ensuring that Somalia remains peaceful and secure for all.
“Furthermore, AMISOM is important to the efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia to rid the country of the presence of extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab,” the two ministers said.
Consequently, they appealed to the United Nations to finance AMISOM via UN-assessed contributions.
