Kenya Elevates Diplomatic Relations with Somaliland

Kenya has promised to elevate its diplomatic relations with Somaliland with immediate effect.

This emerged early this week during President Muse Bihi Abdi’s three-day official tour of Nairobi, Kenya.

Bihi, the President of Somaliland, met with his Kenyan counterpart, President Uhuru Kenyatta at the State House on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Afterward, President Kenyatta promised to open a Kenyan Consulate in the Somaliland capital city by March 2021.

Bihi and Kenyatta released a joint communiqué listing different areas where their nations plan to engage in and these range from security, trade, diplomacy, and travel.

Somaliland pledged to upgrade its Liaison Office in Nairobi by March 2021 too.

These latest developments are great news to Somaliland, which has been fighting for international recognition for decades.

Further, Bihi and Kenyatta agreed that Kenya Airways would start flying directly into Hargeisa by March next year.

By all accounts, President Bihi’s trip to Kenya has been quite fruitful.
