Kenya is finalizing a deal to renew miraa trade with Somalia.
The Kenyan government is currently discussing the protocols that could lead to the full resumption of miraa trade with Somalia.
Ex-President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s administration banned the trade in miraa between Somalia and Kenya.
The ban took effect two years ago at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Kenyan authorities announced plans to resume the trade when President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the inauguration of new Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in June.
Peter Munya, the Kenyan Minister of Agriculture, says that the trade would resume on July 5.
Felix Mutwiri, the Chairman of the Miraa, Pyrethrum, and Other Industrial Crops, said his organization is working on a few outstanding issues before resuming the trade with Somalia.
