Kenya has formed a national committee to stabilize miraa (khat) prices and boost exports to Somalia.
This comes as part of efforts to address fluctuating prices and ensure steady income for farmers, especially in miraa-growing regions like Meru.
The committee aims to implement policies that will ensure sustainable production and fair pricing for miraa, addressing the challenges faced by farmers, traders, and exporters.
Kenya is also focused on expanding its miraa exports to Somalia, which resumed after a three-year ban imposed by Somalia was lifted.
Recent data shows that Kenya exported over 1.4 million kilograms of miraa to Somalia, generating substantial revenue.
However, the volume of daily exports has been limited, and Kenya is negotiating with Somalia to increase these quotas.
By stabilizing prices and boosting exports, Kenya hopes to protect the livelihood of its farmers while strengthening trade ties with Somalia.
