Eleven Kenyan MPs who were arrested for their secret travel to Somalia last week are now free. On Sunday, authorities detained them briefly.
The government is yet to offer any explanation for the unusual action it took to arrest these legislators.
The MPs traveled to Mogadishu from Nairobi on Saturday. According to the government, the trip was “mysterious.”
Before arresting them, police officers had been waiting for the legislators at both Wilson Airport and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The MPs arrested included Mohamed Dahir (Daadab), Adan Ali Sheikh (Mandera South), and Adan Haji (Mandera West).
Others were Bashir Abdullahi (Mandera North), Omar Salah Maalim (Mandera East), Mohamed Hire (Lagdera), and Rashid Kassim (Wajir East).
Ibrahim Abdi (Lafey), Ahmed Kolosh (Wajir West), Kullow Maalim (Banisa), and Ahmed Bashana (Tarbaj) were in the group arrested at Wilson Airport too.
Intelligence reports indicate that the 11 Kenyan MPs met with Fahad Yasin, the Somalia spy chief, secretly.
Yasin calls the shots in Somalia. He stands accused of fueling the tensions that have gripped Gedo Region lately.
However, the MPs have denied meeting Yasin. They termed reports indicating that the meeting took place as “cheap propaganda.”
