Kenyan Politician Barred from Upcoming Elections for Holding Three Citizenships

A Kenyan politician will not take part in next month’s elections in the country after Garissa High Court found him guilty of holding three citizenships.

Lady Justice Abida Aroni found Mohamed Subey Gedi guilty of holding three citizenships; namely, Kenyan, Somali, and the United States.

According to the Kenyan Constitution, a person who is not a citizen of the country is ineligible to take part in elections.

Subey was one of the candidates to represent Fafi Constituency in the Kenyan National Assembly.

Interestingly, the Independent Elections and Boundary Commission (IEBC) had cleared him to vie.

Residents of Fafi Constituency had gone to court to challenge the decision by the IEBC to clear Subey for the upcoming elections.

Kenya holds general elections on August 9.

It will be seeking to elect the country’s new President, Governors, Senators, Women Representatives, Members of Parliament (MPs), and Members of Council Assemblies (MCAs).
