Kenyan President and US Secretary of State Discuss Increased Terrorist Activities in Somalia

On Wednesday, Kenyan President William Ruto and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a diplomatic call to address the escalating terrorist activities in Somalia. President Ruto emphasized the necessity of a united approach between Kenya and the United States to effectively counter this threat, highlighting that collaboration is essential for national security and regional stability.

This discussion occurs amid a surge in attacks by the al-Qaida-linked terror group Al-Shabaab. Notably, on March 18, 2025, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud survived an assassination attempt when his convoy was targeted by a roadside bombing in Mogadishu, an attack claimed by Al-Shabaab.

Additionally, on March 11, 2025, Al-Shabaab militants carried out a deadly assault on the Cairo Hotel in Beledweyne, Somalia, resulting in multiple casualties, including traditional elders and military personnel.

These incidents underscore the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab in the region, despite ongoing military operations by Somali forces and African Union peacekeepers. The discussions between President Ruto and Secretary Rubio reflect a mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation in combating terrorism and promoting stability in Somalia and the broader East African region.
