Kismayo Port has been transformed into a gateway for exporting livestock, sesame seeds, and lemons out of Somalia.
The port has been undergoing intensive renovation to bring it up to par with similar facilities in the region.
Over the years, it has played a critical role in boosting trade in different parts of Somalia.
Ahmed Haji, the Manager of Kismayo Port, says the move is a deliberate one by the Jubbaland administration to boost the facility’s revenue.
Haji also noted that various ships from the Gulf countries dock at Kismayo Port en route to various destinations around the world.
He noted that Kismayo Port has become quite attractive to local and international traders, hence likely to earn higher revenue for Jubbaland administration.
Haji encouraged local traders to engage in livestock farming to increase the likelihood of exporting them to earn more income.
Currently, Kismayo Port employs over 4,000 workers who perform wide-ranging tasks that keep the facility functioning.
This is the first time the port is being used to export such supplies since the former Somali government collapsed.
