Laftagareen, UN Envoy Hold Talks on Security and Development in Baidoa

Baidoa, Somalia – Southwest State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen met on Sunday with UN Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), James Swan, for high-level talks aimed at strengthening stability and development in the region.

According to an official statement, the discussions centered on enhancing security operations, accelerating voter registration, and addressing urgent humanitarian needs across Southwest State. The leaders also reviewed social development programs that are considered vital for long-term peace and resilience in the region.

President Laftagareen emphasized the importance of close cooperation between Somali authorities and international partners, noting that sustained engagement is key to ensuring political inclusivity and stability. He underscored his administration’s commitment to preparing the ground for credible elections and improving service delivery for citizens affected by conflict and climate-related shocks.

UN envoy James Swan reiterated the United Nations’ support for Somalia’s state-building process and highlighted the role of international assistance in bridging gaps in governance, humanitarian relief, and development projects. He further encouraged Somali leaders to continue working toward a peaceful and inclusive political environment.

The meeting comes at a time when Southwest State faces persistent security threats from Al-Shabaab, alongside drought-related humanitarian challenges that have strained local communities. Both sides agreed that coordinated action between the government, UN agencies, and development partners remains crucial to advancing stability and fostering hope for the future.
