Laftagareen Unveils Regional Development Plans at Buur Hakaba Airport Launch

Buur Hakaba, Somalia – Southwest State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen on Sunday inaugurated the newly constructed airport in Buur Hakaba, marking a milestone achievement in infrastructure development for the Bay region.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Laftagareen emphasized that the airport is not only a gateway for improved connectivity but also a catalyst for broader regional development. He announced plans to complete the facility’s second phase, which will expand its capacity to handle more flights and passengers.

The President outlined additional initiatives, including the construction of new schools and the establishment of a university in Buur Hakaba. These education-focused projects, he said, are critical to empowering young people, improving literacy rates, and ensuring long-term social progress in the region.

“This airport represents the spirit of partnership between the Southwest State administration and the community of Buur Hakaba. But our vision goes beyond air travel—we are committed to creating opportunities for our people through education and infrastructure,” Laftagareen stated.

Local community leaders welcomed the announcement, noting that the new airport is expected to strengthen trade, ease humanitarian access, and improve links between Buur Hakaba and other Somali regions. The proposed schools and university were also praised as timely investments in a district where access to higher education has long been limited.

The airport project, realized through collaboration between the state government and local residents, is seen as a symbol of resilience and unity in a region that has endured years of conflict and underdevelopment.

With the launch of Buur Hakaba’s airport and the promise of new education facilities, President Laftagareen positioned his administration’s efforts as a turning point for the district—one aimed at transforming it into a hub of growth and opportunity for Southwest State.
