The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has launched plans to vaccinate 14 million goats in the country.
The Ministry of Livestock, Forestry and Range announced launched the vaccination campaign on February 9.
Hussein Mohamud Sheikh Hussein, the livestock minister, launched the project on Tuesday.
The livestock minister expressed his delight at the program, which enjoys government blessings.
He announced that the government remains committed to vaccinating goats against Contagious Caprine Pleuro Pneumonia (CCPP).
The average cost of vaccinating a single goat against CCPP in Somalia is US$0.40.
Most farmers cannot afford such amounts, especially those with massive herds of goats; hence, the decision by the government to launch this project.
Last year, the government carried out a similar exercise, which targeted 2.2 million goats.
This year’s campaign is supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the government if the United Kingdom.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as well as the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) support the vaccination campaign too.
