Locusts Invade over 300,000ha in Somalia’s Northern Regions

Locusts have invaded close to 300,000 hectares in the northern regions of Somalia, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced.

OCHA announced this figure in its latest monthly report for October 2020.

Consequently, OCHA said that the locust invasion is likely to cause food insecurity and affect the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Somalis in the region.

According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the invasion is likely to render 200,000 without an income or food.

Currently, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is undertaking locust eradication campaigns in various parts of the country.

Several international organizations and governments have partnered with the Somali government to eradicate the locusts.
