Looming Drought Threatens 70% of Somali Families

The looming drought in Somalia threatens the lives of over 70 percent of families in Somalia, according to an assessment by Save the Children organization.

The organization assessed 632 households in different parts of the East African nation.

According to the survey, thousands of children now rely on emergency water trucking for safe drinking water.

Unprotected wells have also turned into lifesavers for an increasing number of local Somalis.

Save the Children discovered that the situation is worsened by reduced rainfall and increasingly severe water shortages.

Moreover, the situation has become deadly for livestock, which are dying in their hundreds too.

Families are now forced to grapple with crop failures and diminished incomes.

Fifty percent of the households surveyed complained that they no longer have enough food to eat.

Eighty-four percent of the respondents claimed that they are forced to sell their livestock or reduced number of meals consumed per day to survive.
