Lower Shabelle Governor Praises FAO for Restoring Irrigation Canals in the Region

Governor Ibrahim Adan Ali Najah of Lower Shabelle has praised Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Somalia for restoring damaged irrigation canals in the region.

FAO restored over 23kms of both primary and secondary canals that Al-Shabaab extremists had destroyed in Lower Shabelle.

The canals are crucial for irrigation and farming in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region.

Lower Shabelle, despite being Somalia’s breadbasket, has suffered several recurrent floods, droughts, and non-stop insecurity,

Without the canals, it has been difficult for farmers in the region to take advantage of Lower Shabelle’s reputation as one of Somalia’s most agriculturally productive areas.

While speaking to the media, Governor Najah praised the restoration and rehabilitation of the canals as “an important lifesaving” step to boost agricultural production in Lower Shabelle.

He commended FAO in Somalia for the leading role it played in the project.
