Hiran, Somalia – At least nine Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Tuesday when local Ma’awisley fighters launched a surprise attack on an insurgent hideout in Goobo village, near Mahas in central Somalia’s Hiran region. The confrontation, which lasted several hours, was one of the most intense clashes in recent weeks between community militias and the extremist group.
Witnesses said the Ma’awisley fighters, who are local residents defending their villages from Al-Shabaab influence, ambushed the militants at dawn after receiving intelligence about their presence in the area. Gunfire echoed across the village as the two sides exchanged heavy fire, forcing civilians to flee to nearby settlements for safety.
A local elder confirmed that the militants were routed from their position, leaving behind weapons and supplies.
Leaders of the Ma’awisley militia vowed to continue their offensive until the region is free of Al-Shabaab, accusing the group of terrorizing villagers, extorting money, and disrupting trade routes.
The Somali National Army has in recent months coordinated efforts with Ma’awisley fighters across Hiran and Galgadud to reclaim territories still under militant control. Security officials say such collaborations have been critical in weakening Al-Shabaab’s grip on central Somalia.
Despite their gains, residents fear the group could launch retaliatory attacks, a pattern often seen following major defeats. Local authorities have urged the federal government to reinforce security and deliver humanitarian support to communities affected by the fighting.
The Hiran region remains a focal point in Somalia’s ongoing campaign against Al-Shabaab, with local militias playing an increasingly decisive role in reclaiming control of their homeland.
