Massive Drug Haul Seized at Mogadishu Airport

Mogadishu, Somalia — Authorities at Mogadishu’s Adan Abdulle International Airport have seized 189 boxes of illicit drugs, including banned pills and other harmful pharmaceutical substances, in a major security operation aimed at curbing narcotics trafficking into the country.

The interception was made during routine cargo inspections, officials confirmed on Friday. According to security sources, the consignment was hidden among commercial shipments and intended for undisclosed recipients within the capital.

Initial assessments suggest the seized drugs include counterfeit medicines, opioids, and controlled substances that pose significant health risks. Some of the pills are listed as internationally banned due to their high potential for abuse and lack of medical justification.

No arrests have been officially announced, but investigations are underway to identify the individuals or networks behind the trafficking attempt. Authorities suspect the involvement of an organized criminal group with international links.

The Federal Government of Somalia has vowed to intensify surveillance and screening measures at key entry points, especially airports and seaports, in an effort to combat drug smuggling and protect public health.

This seizure marks one of the largest drug busts in recent years at the country’s main international gateway.
