Mayor Muungaab Donates $200,000 to SoDMA for Drought Victims in Awdal

Mogadishu, Somalia – In a significant gesture of national solidarity, the Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, today handed over $200,000 in humanitarian assistance to the Commissioner of Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim.

The funds are specifically earmarked for emergency drought relief for communities in the Awdal region, one of the areas hardest hit by prolonged water shortages and worsening food insecurity.

At a brief ceremony in Mogadishu, Commissioner Moallim welcomed the support, calling it “a timely and compassionate act” that demonstrates the importance of nationwide unity during periods of crisis.

“This contribution from Mayor Muungaab is not only financial—it is a message of brotherhood and shared responsibility. It will go directly toward assisting families struggling with the devastating impact of drought in Awdal,” said the SoDMA chief.

Mayor Muungaab emphasized the need for inter-regional cooperation in tackling Somalia’s recurring humanitarian challenges.

“Mogadishu stands with the people of Awdal. We must act as one nation in times of suffering. Today’s support is just the beginning,” he said.

According to SoDMA, the funds will be used to provide immediate food, water, and healthcare support, targeting the most vulnerable, including children, women, and the elderly.

The drought in Awdal, exacerbated by climate change and poor rainfall, has left thousands in urgent need of relief. Humanitarian agencies have warned of deteriorating conditions without sustained assistance.

SoDMA called on other regional administrations, private sectors, and the Somali diaspora to follow the example set by the Mogadishu mayor and contribute to national drought mitigation efforts.
