Mild rains have washed away European-funded $4.3 million runway at Barawe Airport.
Consequently, critics have raised questions regarding the quality of the runway. They mention the possibility that corruption influenced contractors to build a substandard facility.
When commissioning the facility on March 10, Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said, “The renovation is part of the government’s efforts to rebuild damaged infrastructure in Somalia.”
The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) recognized the role that quality infrastructure plays in enhancing productivity, improving security, and boosting mobility.
Nevertheless, those plans now seem to be unrealistic following the mild rains that swept away huge sections of the recently refurbished airport.
In Somalia, the European Union has strived to initiate several mega infrastructure projects to open up the country’s interior for fast and efficient delivery of services.
