Military Court in Puntland Sentences Six Extremists to Death

A military court in the regional state of Puntland has sentenced six extremists to death.

The same court also passed heavy sentences – lengthy jail terms – to several years in prison for other militants.

The court passed the sentences after a trial that found the men guilty of the crimes for which they had been charged.

In recent years, Al-Shabaab extremists have made incredulous efforts to turn Puntland into their forte.

However, the military has carried out regular operations to flush out the militants.

Galkayo and Bossaso are two of the most affected places in the region.

Militants seem incapable of staying away from these two cities.

The military court that sentenced the militants to death and imprisonment considered the evidence presented by the prosecution.

The men sentenced to either death or imprisonment were responsible for a spate of assassinations that rocked Galkayo between 2017-2021.

Apart from those sentenced to death, the rest will serve jail terms of 20-30 years.
